History

Charcuterie (pronounced “shahr-ku-tuh-ree”) is a French term for the artistic arrangement of dried fruits, nuts, and cold meats on a wooden board. During the pandemic, charcuterie boards grew to have other nicknames such as “the adult Lunchables”.

However, we can assure you that when arranged thoughtfully, like by a Miami catering company such as ourselves, the assortment of flavors and textures looks starkly different from a Lunchables meal. A charcuterie board will give your guests the ability to pick their favorite parts from a spread, can serve as the starter before the main course, and be an Instagram-worthy photo all at the same time.

Pick Your Pairings

Similarly to how you thoughtfully chose your significant other, deciding on the pairings for your charcuterie board is an exciting but thought-provoking process. First, you’ll need to decide what the role of the charcuterie board will be. Ask yourself:

Is it a starter?

Is it a grazing table?
This may take some pressure off you and allow your guests to eat what they prefer from a larger and more assorted spread

Is it dessert?

A wooden board serving several sweets will save your guests from having to politely decline a dessert they dislike or the walk to the dessert table to grab one of everything! After you’ve answered those questions, we recommend you and your spouse work on deciding the food components based on your personal tastes and dietary restrictions. The most inviting component of a charcuterie board is the thoughtful arrangement of small bites and garnishes. Some of the more classic garnish choices we’ve seen are salami roses, herbs, colorful fruits, or edible flowers. Your flower arrangement colors, or the flowers themselves, can easily be incorporated into a charcuterie board to ensure cohesion in decor.

If you have the budget for it and are willing to work with your caterer in planning, we also recommend that you intentionally decide on the boards being used! Charcuterie boards are generally wooden platters, but why not get creative with shapes or sizes? Some couples choose to have their boards engraved like these, to serve as a keepsake for guests. Others challenge the idea of a traditional charcuterie board by using boards that aren’t even made of wood, such as these.
